Summary: Last Time in Vienna
Comment: Everyone in the orchestra and the audience knew this would be the last time they would see Carlos Kleiber conduct this celebration. There was an underlying sense of sadness during the performance as well as great joy. Gerhard Hetzle (concertmaster) was terrific. I prefer the '89 concert because I like the musical choices better and I think Kleiber was in better health but all in all, anytime you have a chance to hear and see Carlos Kleiber you should! The orchestra plays superbly for him and, of course, his interpretations are squeaky clean.

Comment: As usual Carlos Klieber attained his usual self to be the world leading conductor by exhibited the world greatest symphony orchestra to make the new year such an usual event especially in Vienna to be shared throughout the world every time a person plays the DVD during the year.
This is the first DVD I purchased, since the last Laser Disc.

Summary: Beautiful picture resolution and sound make me feel like I'm in Vienna
Comment: Philips has hit the top specs with this DVD: the picture resolution and sound are so good, clear and accurate they make me feel as though I'm in Vienna, live at this January 1, 1992 concert of the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Carlos Kleiber (1930-2004). This is one of Kleiber's later rare TV appearances, and he is firmly in control of the Vienna Philharmonic: with minimal gestures, he conjures the needed music from the VPO musicians, be it Nicolai, Johann Strauss Jr. or Sr. or others on this program. Still, the flow of the music is natural and Kleiber's leadership never becomes invasive or "masterful," as in say Herbert von Karajan's Tchaikovsky Symphony recordings (DG CDs). Incidentally, Karajan's NEW YEARS CONCERT FROM VIENNA (Sony DVD) is excellent in every respect, and not masterful at all, as his Tchaikovsky was.
The audience is large and appreciative, but never intrusive into my enjoyment of this DVD. Kleiber conducts a perky "Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor" (Otto Nicolai) to begin the program, and the following selection of Waltzes and Polkas by the Strauss family all give much enjoyment. Kleiber senses the perfect tempo and phrasing for each selection. I have heard many of the New Years Concerts, and consider this (along with Kleiber's 1989 concert) one of the best ones.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. My only regret is that Carlos Kleiber is no longer living, and will not conduct the New Years - or any other - concerts, in the future.
